Welcome to Stupid-Penguin
This site is a place for me to keep notes on all my wheelings and dealings with Linux.
I've been a Microsoft guy for a while now, and I still think they are a great company. However I have been getting more and more into the world of open source, and figure I might as well learn the operating system to go along with it. If you are already a Linux person, this site might seem really lame and obvious to you. But please, if you have some good knowledge or tips that might help the rest of us trying to learn a new operating system, add them here. I really hope I'm not the only one who ever comes to this site to add content.
The the world of virtualization is here. Software licensing, especially operating system licensing, is becoming more and more of a factor in purchasing decisions. If I am running 5-6 virtual machines on a single server rather than just packing one operating system full of services, the licensing costs go up dramatically.
The world of Linux is an intersting one because there are so many different flavors and different opinions. I'm pretty much a noobie when it comes to the Linux world, so I have decided to try and learn only two flavors to start out with. The two flavors of linux that I'm trying to learn are Ubuntu and CentOS. I have made these decisions because Ubuntu seems to be the fastest growing Linux flavor with lots of support and praise. I have choosen CentOS because it's built from the same codebase as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Large clients (corporations) that I deal with that use Linux tend to lean to the Red Hat side. Since there are license costs associated with Red Hat, CentOS is the perfect choice for me.
